Too cute not to share..

My 4 year old and I, shooting a .22 rifle. A friend of mine brought over his MP5 in .22 cal.

Kind of a proud moment as my son quickly went through 25 rounds!

Naturally, I wasn't teaching him any aiming techniques though I was able to keep the rifle pretty close on target as he plinked away!

Awesome! I got my 6 yr old son a Stevens youth model .22 to shoot this summer. It's still a bit big for him and I don't know how he'll be able to shoot while wincing and holding his hands over his ears, but we'll get it figured out.

Re: Too cute not to share..

Great pic! You gotta start them young these days. The GSG5 is a great little rifle that is still affordable to shoot.

:23_30_104::23_30_104::ok: The fact that just average folks, regular Americans are learning how to shoot with an MP5 gives me hope. The good guys will win when this turns into a fight.
I have never even seen one of those in person and I've been around guns my whole life.:ok:

JJ,

Awesome pictures, even though they are on a cell phone! It is good to see our kids excited about following in our foot steps!

AOW,

6 is a pretty good age to start though my 4 year old is constantly after me about shooting "monsters"!

Irons,

Indeed! Have you heard of Appleseeds? You should check it out if not, lots of red blooded Americans learning to shoot these days. http://www.appleseedinfo.org/ ... If anyone is in driving distance to Northeast Florida I am looking to put an event on with the Florida
Appleseeds group this summer. I will post a date once I have it.

negative,

I was pleasantly surprised by the GSG5. Hardly no kick and very little noise even with standard .22lr. I was going to use subsonic rounds but these were just fine. My son had a ball!

Heim,

You bet my man! Actually, my 2 year old has shot my 10-22 Ruger, with me holding it of course. I couldn't get over the fact it made him giggle every time he shot it! :D I don't know if that is a good or bad thing? lol!

Iptuous,

Thank you my good sir. I will be looking forward to your pics once your little one is up to a little shooting!

Thats great man! I cant wait to take my daughter(and hopefully other kids by then) shooting.

I want to start my nephew, who is about 5 now and my brother, being a big bad neo-con, is piss scared to get a gun.

The kid is smart though, and he knows not to touch real guns, like mine, without permission, and yadda yadda. I figure start him with a pellet gun and move up in a couple years he'd be good to go, but its my brothers kid, so I have little say in it.

Was this picture up at your property?

OK I'm the sour grape here...Where is the eye protection and hearing protection?
As a tinnitus sufferer of 30+years I can tell you that ear protection is VERY important! Keep them kids shootin’ but practice eye and ear protection (that goes for the adults in those photos also!)

LOL- I was wondering who was going to say something first! :D

No excuse on the eye protection. Just one of those things I didn't do but should have.

However; the .22, at least in this rifle and in my 10/22 Ruger seem to have hardly any real noise so I thought this would be a good opportunity to get my kids use to the sound. Anything else, and I will probably insist on hearing protection. Also, you can shoot subsonic .22 which is virtually silent.

In any case, I will be sure to take your advice ;)

Good job, but even with a .22 if it makes you flinch, it's hurting the nerves in your inner ear. He'll need those young ears to hear the zombies coming! Keep up the good work!

Re: Too cute not to share..

One of our DCF agents will be at your door shortly. According to the American Academy of Pediatricts, guns are 100% UN SAFE for ALL children under the age of 18, 100% of the time(I shit you not).

You have put your child into a 100% unsafe environment and therefore forfeit your parental rights. You must fill out a form 10557 to request an appeal to have the proper forms sent to you to submit an apeal to have your child returned on weekends.

Good rule of thumb... I am pretty good about wearing protection but will make it a point to do better., especially considering the second point you made :)

You make a really good point lots of folks don't pay attention to.Guns are fun and you have to know how to use them, but if you blow your eardrums out its not good.My Dad is a US Marine, God Bless him but he is deaf. You can go to concerts, you can go to drag races but there is only so much artillary your ears can take.

I'll second that. Had tinnitus since age 4, have to sleep with a fan on every night to drown out the ringing.

True story: Found a 22 round in a glass jar when I was 4, hit it with a hammer on concrete. Rimfire goes boom. I was ok, parents panicked. dad found the casing, never found the round.

Very traumatic... the worst part for me? I DISTINCTLY remember dad running over my weeble wobble train set pulling into the driveway from racing home from work.

Ringing ears suck... kids get into everything....

Nice looking boy - I have a boy just ready to turn 6. He and I went to the range and shot the 44 mag pistol at a few water jugs.....I did all the holding and he reached around my grip and pulled the trigger...he was impressed by the destructive power. It was a good lesson to let him know what guns can do.

BTW: I have a very cute 4 year old patriot girl.....look me up in 15 years. We could breed 'em!

Outstanding parenting, guys! One of my best memories is of my grandpa teaching me how to shoot at age 8 and teaching me how to drive his ancient pickup that same year! We would drive into town to pickup various things and grandpa would have to "talk things over with the guys" at the local saloon. Halfway home, he'd pull over and tell me, "Boy, you take it from here". Mind you, this was very rural South Dakota! Best summer of my life!

I was lucky my many close encouters never did any permenant damage(that im aware of). My worst was when I was about 16 I was starting to get into medieval reenactments.

Well, I thought one day Id go practice my ax throwing skills with a very nice, light weigh, bearded danish throwing axe(that cost a pretty penny at the time).

I used a telephone pole.

Unbeknownst to me, if you hit the shroud that covers the power lines that run down the side of the pole to the underground conncetion, the ax will go right through it, sever the power line, cause a massive electrical explosion with blinding white light that launches you back a few feet onto your butt and will then send a very pretty, but very large, blue flame to consume the entire 80 foot tall wood power pole.

Yeah....I had some ringing in my ears for a good 7 or 8 hours. :thumb.aspx:

ruprick,

Isn't it great to see that little light go on in their eyes? It is really hard to explain until you see it and I am sure most of you Dads know what I mean.

By the way, that second part made me laugh!

In all honesty, nothing would make me prouder than for my son to find a patriot woman to grow old with... Cheers to the thought - :coolbeer:

Good Lord TechGuy! I about broke down crying after the weeble wobble train set part!

In all seriousness, I honestly don't know how I made it unscathed after my childhood years and multiple experiments ranging from explosives to lasers and God knows what else!

I just hope my kids survive theirs without too many dings.

Hey gopher, great to hear from you.

You know we had a great time visiting, unfortunately we didn't get to do as much shooting as we wanted too but great catching up none-the-less.

I was going down memory lane with all of our past shoots and the old "rat pack".. Great times indeed.

Nope, Mine is nerve damage and not fixable yet. Cutting out caffeine, salt, and other stimulates will quiet it somewhat. But the trade off is not acceptable so my ears ring (3000-5000hz range with a 18% to 20% hearing loss) in both ears. I'm used to it, after 30+ years you get that way. Mine is from a very large air hammer inside of a ship from back when I worked for a living.

The only time it really bothers me is when i am trying to sleep in total quiet, hence the white noise from the fan.

I am super sensitive to high pitch noises that approx match the tone of the ringing though, tube tv startup, some electronics transformers, etc....

When the power fails, I really hate it....

Most of my hearing loss is from the years that I worked cleaning castings with air tools and from running an arc furnace. mtnman, running an air hammer on steel in an enclosed space; I can understand how you got tinnitus! There are frequencies that get generated when you use a chipping hammer on a big ductile iron casting, that start to loosen your teeth! There is a resonant effect, with some wicked harmonics, bad shyte.

The air hammer we were using had a ram that was 3" in diameter. We were knocking 4" in diameter bolts out of a propeller shaft in a space that was 5' in diameter. The worker comp case paid me $15,000. Not nearly enough!

Your hearing is more precious than you know. I have constant ringing in my right ear that results from a chronic ear infection that was corrected years ago -- the ringing remains. Loud noises are not the only enemy.
